Renowned director Shankar has recently applauded the horror film “Sabdham,” directed by Arivazhagan and featuring Aadhi, for its groundbreaking use of sound. The film has attracted considerable attention for its distinctive approach, where sound plays a pivotal role in enhancing the horror experience. “Sabdham” starts with two consecutive suicides in a medical college in Munnar, igniting rumors of a supernatural presence. The institution enlists Ruben, a ghost investigator portrayed by Aadhi, to ascertain whether the college is haunted. The movie’s technical excellence, especially in sound design, has been widely recognized, although some critics have pointed out that the storyline becomes intricate with an abundance of ideas.
Shankar particularly commended the pre-interval sequence, noting its impressive execution and the crucial role sound played in heightening the suspense and atmosphere. He also praised Aadhi’s performance, highlighting his strong screen presence as a significant factor in the film’s success. Additionally, the music composed by Thaman received accolades for its substantial impact, contributing to the overall eerie and immersive experience. “Sabdham” has distinguished itself in the horror genre for its technical mastery and compelling storytelling, making it a noteworthy addition to Tamil cinema.
However, Shankar himself has been embroiled in less favorable circumstances. He is currently dealing with legal challenges concerning his 2010 film “Enthiran” (Robot). The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has provisionally attached three of his properties, valued at approximately ₹10.11 crore, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), 2002. Despite a clear legal ruling from the Madras High Court in 2023 dismissing the plagiarism claims related to “Enthiran,” the ED has continued with the attachment of Shankar’s properties. Shankar has expressed his disappointment, labeling the ED’s actions as a misuse of the legal process.
Additionally, Shankar’s recent films, “Indian 2” and “Game Changer,” have not performed well at the box office, adding to his current challenges. Despite these issues, Shankar’s endorsement of “Sabdham” underscores his lasting influence and presence in the Tamil film industry.
