Miranda House, a prominent college under Delhi University, has taken legal action against the creators of the Amazon Prime series Ziddi Girls. The college claims that the fictional institution depicted in the show, Matilda House (MH), bears a striking resemblance to Miranda House, raising concerns about misrepresentation and defamation.
Through a Delhi University-empaneled lawyer, Miranda House has sent a legal notice demanding edits to the trailer to remove references to “MH” and allow the college administration and student union to preview the series before its release on February 27.
Directed by Shonali Bose, a Miranda House alumna, Ziddi Girls follows the lives of students at a college named Matilda House. Despite the show’s fictional nature, students and alumni argue that the similarities between Matilda House and Miranda House are too significant to overlook.
An eight-member committee, including student representatives, was formed by Principal Prof. Bijayalaxmi Nanda to address the issue. They found the first trailer objectionable, particularly in its portrayal of women and the institution. Although a revised trailer has been released, the original version remains online, prompting the college to insist on its removal.
The college has requested that the first trailer be taken down, the word “House” be removed from the fictional college’s name, and any reference to “MH” be eliminated. The situation remains unresolved as the college awaits a formal response from the series’ creators.
Last week, Miranda House strongly criticized the show’s depiction of its students, arguing that it misrepresents the college and tarnishes its legacy. Shonali Bose, in response, urged viewers to watch the show, assuring them that there is no betrayal of her college and nothing regressive in it.
The controversy has sparked a broader discussion about the representation of educational institutions in media and the responsibilities of filmmakers in ensuring accurate and respectful portrayals.
